GCSE Classics Reading List

Many pupils come to Y10 with an excellent knowledge of Greek myths, but are less secure on the historical background to Greece and Rome. As a source-based GCSE, which is rooted in ancient history, it's a good idea to remedy this! Items marked with an * are likely to be the most challenging (and probably, therefore, the most rewarding!).

1.  General

Very Short Introductions

These are written by leading academics and might be a tiny bit challenging at the start. Luckily, they're only 100 pages or so while still being hugely informative. Relevant are the VSIs to Ancient Greece, Classical Mythology, The Roman Republic, and the Roman Empire

R. Lane Fox, The Classical World: an epic history*

An excellent overview of Greece and Rome.

2.  Ancient Greece

Matyzsak, P. A Year in the Life of Ancient Greece (see also 24 Hours in Ancient Athens)

An innovative  look at 3rd century BC Greece through the eyes of different people involved in the Olympic games.

Higgins, C. It's All Greek to Me

A highly readable book covering a range of topics from ancient Greece and its influence on our own.

3. Ancient Rome

Beard, M. SPQR*
An accessible history of Rome by Britain’s most well known classicist

Matyzsak, P. 24 Hours in Ancient Rome
A history of ancient Rome imagined as a modern guidebook.

Toner, J. Release Your Inner Roman
Similar to the above, Toner imagines himself as an ancient Rome to introduce the reader to a range of topics from the era. Enjoyable and readable.
